Bulgarian underdogs DUPNITSA claim first victory
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men

Samokov, Bulgaria, December 12, 2013. Bulgaria’s champions Marek Union-Ivkoni DUPNITSA could finally claim their first victory in the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men and they did so on Thursday night at the Arena Samokov where they edged Slovenia’s ACH Volley LJUBLJANA in straight sets (25-22, 25-21, and 25-23). “We did not have much luck in our last matches so I am particularly happy with this home victory” said Marek Union-Ivkoni captain Gjorgi Gjorgiev.
The game was very close right from the start with ACH Volley leading the way at the first technical time-out with a very slim margin (7:8). The guests scored a few good attacks to widen their lead at the second mandatory stop (13:16) but the home heroes eventually cashed their first set since the start of the League Round as they cruised to the final 25-22.
The second set followed a very similar story but this time it was Marek Union-Ivkoni that dictated the tempo of the game at the first technical time-out (8:6). The Bulgarian team showed some great actions and excellent blocks to keep control of the operations (16:13) and they finally sealed the 25-21 that cemented their supremacy in this game.
ACH Volley responded by setting the pace in the early phases of the third set (6:8) and by the time the second technical time-out was called they still were ahead even though by the slimmest margin (15:16). However, the young Bulgarian players fought their way back and they seized the night by finishing it off at 25-23 to celebrate their first victory in the competition.
