Tomis upsets Turkish giant Halkbank with surprising away victory
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men
Ankara, Turkey, December 11, 2013. Romania’s Tomis CONSTANTA caused a major sensation on Wednesday at the Baskent Volleyball Hall as they beat Halkbank ANKARA 3:1 (25-21, 27-29, 25-23, and 25-21) to stop the winning streak of the rookies from Turkey’s capital city. Still this result does not help Romania’s champions who are already out of contention for a spot in the Playoffs 12 but Halkbank will have to battle with Poland’s JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel in the last round of the prelims to keep their first place in Pool F. Israel Rodriguez Calderon paced Tomis with 23 points while another 17 were contributed by their Slovak opposite Martin Nemec. Tomis registered 10 aces in the end while Halkbank only had three.
The teams started the game very determined and fully concentrated and the guests forced home mentor Radostin Stoytchev into a time-out as Halkbank was trailing 11:12. Tomis widened their lead by the second technical time-out (16:13) and brought it home with a margin of four (25-21) to set the tone for what would have been a great night for Romania’s champions.
Tomis stretched momentum also to the early phases of the second set but Halkbank was brought back on track by their superstars Osmany Juantorena and Matey Kaziyski. The Bulgarian spiker eventually completed that comeback (6:8, 14:16) by sealing the set at 29-27 with an ace.
The score was very close also in the third set and none could predict the side that would have had the upper hand in the end. Halkbank seemed to be able to take control of the operations (21:18) but a time-out asked by Tomis mentor Martin Stoev waked his players up and they responded with a great comeback to make it 25-23 and 2:1 in sets.
The fourth set, on the other hand, was controlled by Tomis from the start up to the end. Wing-spiker Israel Calderon finished the game with a great hit (25-21) to start the celebrations for a night that Tomis will remember for a long time.
