Halkbank ANKARA claims fourth victory after routing Austria’s vice-champions
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men
Ankara, Turkey, December 5, 2013. Halkbank ANKARA is one of five teams with an immaculate record of four victories in as many matches in the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men. The star-studded team from Turkey’s capital city achieved this feat on Thursday night as they routed Hypo Tirol INNSBRUCK of Austria in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, and 25-15) to add another chapter to their success story in what is their first appearance in Europe’s elite club competition.
Halkbank ANKARA dictated the tempo of the game right from the start (8:6) as head coach Radostin Stoytchev opted for setter Hüseyin Koc instead of Brazilian Raphael Vieira de Oliveira who recently won gold with his national team at the World Grand Champions Cup in Japan. Two of the major stars signed for this season by Halkbank, Osmany Juantorena and young opposite Mitar Tzourits (pictured), left their mark on the opening set that the home side cashed it with the score of 25-18.
There were about 2,000 fans in attendance tonight at the Baskent Volleyball Hall including some high-school students involved in a special project promoted by Halkbank, the European Union and Gazi University known as BookBank. These teens did read books during time-out and between the sets in an effort to raise awareness on the importance of reading for the young generations.
The course of the game did not change also in the second set though there was a close start there with the score leveled up to 6 all. After that, Halkbank broke away (9:6) and even the trio composed by Janis Peda, Ronald Jimenez and Michal Rak could not help Hypo Tirol stand the pace imposed by Juantorena & Co. Halkbank could comfortably lead at the second technical time-out (16:11) and even though INNSBRUCK head coach Stefan Chrtiansky replaced Jimenez with Lorenz Koraimann, the home side cashed the second set with another 25-18.
Halkbank pressured their opponent right from the start of the third set and had a very comfortable lead (16:8) by the time the second technical time-out was called. Koraimann could not stop the march of the home heroes and Halkbank brought it home in straight sets (25-15) for their fourth straight victory in the competition.
