Lokomotiv accomplish their mission with home victory over MACERATA to stay in the race for Playoffs
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men
Novosibirsk, Russia, December 3, 2013. In what was a make-or-break game, Lokomotiv NOVOSIBIRSK edged on Tuesday Italy’s Lube Banca Marche MACERATA 3:1 (25-23, 25-15, 19-25, and 25-17) to stop the winning streak of their opponents after three rounds and get back in the race for a spot in the Playoffs 12 of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men. Waiting for the game starring Zenit KAZAN and Austria’s Posojilnica AICH/DOB coming up later tonight, MACERATA still tops the charts in Pool E with nine points but Lokomotiv got back on track with seven.
As they try to retain the title they won last March in Omsk, the players from Siberia’s largest city needed to score a home victory if they still wanted to keep alive their chances to make the next round of Europe’s elite competition. The first set was very close with Lokomotiv leading the way by very narrow margins at the first and second technical time-outs (8:7, 16:14). In the end the hosts sealed the opening set at 25-23 thanks to the attacks killed by their opposite Pavel Moroz.
The second set started with Lokomotiv setting the pace of the game right from the go (8:3) while the guests from Italy were struggling, especially in reception. They eventually changed Bartosz Kurek and Jiri Kovar as Simone Parodi was back in action after nursing an injury and with Alessandro Paparoni also trying to stabilize their defence. Still it did not work especially as Lokomotiv middle blockers did a great job at the net to make it 25-15 for the home side in the end.
MACERATA finally found their way into the game in the third set as they went up 8:7 and 16:10, breaking away in the score after the first technical time-out. Lokomotiv tried to change the course of the game with some substitutions but the guests cruised comfortably to the final 25-19. Things changed completely once more in the fourth set where Lokomotiv re-imposed their rule (25-17) to claim a very important home victory as their star Pavel Moroz finished the game with 22 points.
