PIACENZA wants straight victory over Bulgaria’s champions
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men
Piacenza, Italy, November 5, 2013. Italy’s vice-champions Copra Elior PIACENZA will continue on Thursday their adventure in the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men playing Bulgaria’s Marek Union-Ivkoni DUPNITSA. Since last October 20 the players around head coach Luca Monti have been playing every three days by combining the national league and Europe’s elite club competition, so they haven’t much time to practice and work on their tactics.
After losing the opening game of the national league to Altotevere CITTA' DI CASTELLO, PIACENZA got back on track edging Tonno Callipo CALABRIA VIBO VALENTIA at home (3:1) and claiming last weekend also the away derby with Casa MODENA (3:2). Copra Elior dominated the scene there in the opening set (25-17) before MODENA responded by cashing the second and third (25-21 and 25-23). Robertlandy Simon, Alessandro Fei, Kevin Le Roux and Denys Kaliberda – who was replacing team captain Hristo Zlatanov – then changed the course of the game for PIACENZA in a dramatic fourth set (32-30) thereby calling for the tie-break. Fei and Simon were on a class of their own there and anchored PIACENZA to the final 15-11 and a well-deserved away victory.
Last week PIACENZA got back home after losing to TOURS VB at the tie-break and Zlatanov will be missing the upcoming game with DUPNITSA as he suffered a wrist injury after returning from France. Copra Elior will try to seize the night to get back the leadership in Pool A while DUPNITSA will be trying to cause a sensation after losing their previous games in straight sets to TOURS VB as well as to ACH Volley LJUBLJANA.
“The game with DUPNITSA is crucial for our campaign in the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League” says head coach Luca Monti. “We must win in straight sets otherwise things can become quite complicated for us in this group.”
