Halkbank ANKARA wins close match with Tomis CONSTANTA
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men

Constanta, Romania, October 30, 2013. Tomis CONSTANTA and Halkbank ANKARA played on Wednesday for the leadership in prelim Pool F of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men and the guests from Turkey eventually had the upper hand with a 3:1 away victory (25-23, 19-25, 25-23, and 25-15). It was a very special game as the home fans from the city on the shores of the Black Sea had the opportunity to see some of the world’s greatest Volleyball stars in action including two guys who used to play together for Bulgaria’s national team, Tomis setter Andrey Zhekov and Halkbank wing-spiker Matey Kaziyski.
The game started really well for Tomis (6:5) but Halkbank had already flipped the charts around at the first technical time-out (7:8); the score remained very close up to the end with Halkbank able to have the upper hand (23-25). The hosts started the second set very motivated especially with the contribution by Israel Calderon – who scored 15 points in the game – as well as Reda Haikal and Andrei Spinu. Tomis controlled the game right from the go (5:2) and did not dissipated their lead (16:11, 18:12); even though their middle-blocker Sergiu Stancu got injured as the score stood at 20:16, they could cruise to the final 25-19 to give their fans something to cheer about.
The duel continued in the third set where Tomis caught the better start (8:5) and the score was very close up to the second technical time-out (16:15). After that Halkbank changed gear (18:21) and even though Tomis fought bravely, they could not prevent their rivals from going for the 1:2 (23-25). The trio composed by Matey Kaziyski, Osmany Juantorena and Mitar Tzourits stood out for Halkbank in the fourth set (5:8, 11:16) and after two hours of play the side from Turkey’s capital city could seal their second victory in the competition (15-25) with Kaziyski top scoring in the end with 17 points.

“The final result is not good for us because we did not get a point from this game” said Tomis head coach Martin Stoev. “There were moments where we played at the same level or even better than Halkbank did with the only exception of the fourth set”.
“We tried to play a close game but I think we made errors in some key moments and did so especially with our serve” commented home captain Andrey Zhekov.

“We knew that we were going to have a difficult game here in Constanta and so I am happy with this victory but not with the way we played tonight” said Halkbank mentor Radostin Stoytchev.
“We did not know that much about our opponent but tonight both teams played good Volleyball and fought for every point” added Matey Kaziyski. “I think that if Stancu hadn’t got injured in the second set our mission tonight would have been more difficult.”
