BERLIN hands second straight defeat to Turkey’s champions IZMIR
2014 CEV Denizbank Volleyball Champions League - Men

Izmir, Turkey, October 29, 2013. Germany’s champions BERLIN Recycling Volleys scored tonight an away victory in Turkey as they edged the hosts of Arkas IZMIR 3:1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-20, and 25-21) in the second round of preliminary action in Pool D of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men. This way BERLIN compensated for their away defeat last week to Diatec TRENTINO of Italy while Arkas IZMIR suffered their second consecutive setback after their 2-3 loss to Switzerland’s Energy Investments LUGANO.
BERLIN started out strong (8:7) and widened the gap at the second mandatory stop of the first set (16:12). The home guys of Arkas showed their willingness to fight as they fought their way back and drew level at 17 all. After that, they even flipped the charts around and cashed the opening set (25-23) with an ace by their 18-year old setter Yigit Gülmezoglu.

BERLIN responded in the second set setting the pace of the game at the first and second technical time-out (8:3, 16:7); the home guys of Arkas made a way too many errors and BERLIN quickly finished that set at 25-15.
After a very close start, BERLIN got a very small lead halfway through the third set (16:14) and they eventually kept control of the operations up to the final 25-20.
The team around head coach Mark Lebedew displayed excellent Volleyball also in the fourth set and finished it off at 25-21 for a well-deserved 3:1 victory. Robert Kromm top scored for BERLIN with 18 points and US American setter Kawika Shoji also showed an excellent performance for the guests; John Gordon Perrin paced the home side in their losing effort with 16 points.

Arkas IZMIR head coach Glenn Hoag was very disappointed after the game: “We could not side out today and we were not effective with our attacks. Our opponents got the right confidence, they served hard and we could not respond to this. We are disappointed to lose this way at home and we will try to play better in the next matches.”
