World bronze medalists TRENTINO delighted with home victory
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men

Trento, Italy, October 24, 2013. In the opening match of their campaign in the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League, the young team of Diatec TRENTINO edged German national champions BERLIN Recycling Volleys after an enthusiastic comeback in the third set (25-20, 21-25, 29-27, and 25-21).
Head coach Roberto Serniotti opted for the same starting six that had seized the bronze medal just four days ago in Betim at the 2013 FIVB Club World Championships.
In the opening set the guests of BERLIN caught a good start with three points by their spiker Robert Kromm and took the lead with a margin of five points (7-12), thanks also to the powerful serves by Paul Carroll. Serniotti decided to replace Alexandre Ferreira with youngster Michele Fedrizzi (16-17) and at the end the Italians took a crucial lead and wrapped it up at 25-20.

The second set followed a similar plot, where BERLIN Recycling Volleys set the pace of the game right from the start (4-1). TRENTINO got back on track at 15-17 but their comeback was not strong enough to fight back the serves and the attacks by Kromm and Carroll who finished the job at 18-25.

In the third section of the game, setter Giacomo Sintini and spiker Ferreira were lined up for Donald Suxho and Fedrizzi. This set was played point for point (11-11), but TRENTINO seemed to lose a bit of concentration. Although the Germans jumped away at 23:20 the hosts were able to cut the margin once again (24-24) for a breath-taking final, delighting the fans with spectacular defense actions and long rallies. This set was finally sealed by home team with the score of 29-27.

With two sets in its pocket, TRENTINO started the fourth set in high spirits; BERLIN tried to come back but in the last phase of the set, TRENTINO took complete control of the operations and eventually claimed the victory with an attack by a superb Tsvetan Sokolov (25-21).

The Portuguese spiker Alexandre Ferreira was named MVP of the match with 40% of efficiency in attack (11 points, 4 blocks). Noteworthy was also the performance of opposite Tsvetan Sokolov (57% of efficiency in attack and 23 points). On the other side of the net there were remarkable performances for Robert Kromm and Paul Carroll, who scored together 42 points.

“It was a tough match, as I expected. I did not like our start because we wasted the chance to score points. I would like to spend a few words for Sintini, who is training at his best and until now he had not any chance to play in official matches, but tonight he made the difference and led the team to the victory. Though we have still technical problems to work on, we did not give up and fought until the last point. I really like the attitude of my guys. It is an important win against the strongest team of Pool D” stated local coach Roberto Serniotti.

“We did not exploit important situations, especially in the first and third set, and we have been punished by TRENTINO that has changed a lot compared to the past seasons, but it is still very competitive. We should reflect upon our mistakes and try to improve for the next matches,” said the head coach of BERLIN Recycling Volleys, Mark Lebedew.
