Resovia downs PARIS Volley after real show of strength
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men

Paris, France, October 24, 2013. France’s PARIS Volley could not celebrate a successful comeback in Europe’s elite club competition as they lost their home match on Thursday to Poland’s champions Asseco Resovia RZESZOW in straight sets (20-25, 26-28, and 11-25).
There were 2,000 fans in attendance at Charpy arena and many also from Poland for the first round of play in the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men. The match started with a very close race as the score was very tight and PARIS had the slimmest margin of all at the first technical time-out (8:7); however, Asseco Resovia gradually found their best play with middle-blocker Piotr Nowakowski and their opposite Dawid Konarski. Even though the hosts of PARIS Volley served strong, Resovia showed great reception and this eased up the work of their setter Lukas Tichacek who anchored his side to the provisional 1:0 (25-20).

PARIS Volley played their best in the second set and especially in the early phases (9:7); Goran Maric however suffered a knee injury and was substituted by Rémi Fidon. The young Frenchman did a good job but PARIS setter Guillermo Hernan looked a bit unsecure and did not know exactly if he had to involve Fidon a little more in the game or to opt for his other spikers. This uncertainty eventually paved the way with gold for Resovia that drew level at 22. Hernan set for Dutchman Jeroen Trommel right by the time the Poles had a set ball and he was promptly blocked so that RZESZOW could go for the 2:0 (28-26).

With Peter Veres in great shape, Resovia dominated the scene in the third set; PARIS replaced Trommel, Philippe Tuitoga and Hernan with William Bersani Da Costa, Dennis Van der Veen and Antoine Brizard but it did not change a thing. Resovia moved up 15:5 after only 10 minutes of play and two blocks by Konarski on Bersani. RZESZOW widened their lead to 22:8 and wrapped it up at 25-11 to re-assert their credentials as pre-favorite team in Pool C.

“It was not an easy game especially in the first and second set” said Resovia head coach Andrzej Kowal after the match. “We are very happy because this is the result that we wanted to get from this game. Today PARIS had problems with their opposite and I am sure that they can play better than they did tonight”.

“It was not easy to replace Goran (Maric) but I did my best” commented Rémi Fidon. “It was very nice to play in a crowded arena like we did tonight so we are disappointed with the result and especially with the third set”.
