Budvanska Rivijera celebrates first home victory in three years
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men

Budva, Montenegro, October 24, 2013. Budvanska Rivijera BUDVA caught a memorable start of their campaign in the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League as they routed their opponents from the Czech Republic, Jihostroj CESKE BUDEJOVICE, in straight sets (25-17, 25-18, and 25-15) at Mediteranski sports center. Marko Bojic and Aleksandar Minic top scored for the home side with 14 points apiece with Milan Markovic also finishing in double digits (10). Jan Kuliha paced Jihostroj in their losing effort with 9 points.
This was the very first home victory for Budvanska Rivijera BUDVA in the competition since three years ago they had edged Olympiacos PIRAEUS of Greece.
Though everyone knew that Budvanska Rivijera had put together a much stronger group than last year after signing Bojic, Markovic, Minic, and Italy’s Marco Falaschi, still the team had to show their skills in Europe’s elite club competition to live up to their fans’ expectations. Finally the guys around head coach Sinisa Reljic seized the day in three sets for a night to remember and to take maximum points from their first game in prelim Pool C.

Minic, Bojic and Falaschi showed their quality right from the start of the match; Vojin Cacic and Marko Bojic confirmed the quality of Budvanska Rivijera’s wing-spikers whilst wing-spiker Minic was absolutely outstanding in reception. Markovic and Luka Suljagic killed some great blocks to set the tone of the game. Already by the second technical time-out of the first set, with the score standing at 16:9 for the home heroes, it was clear that Jihostroj was not going to stand a chance. Minic and all other players seemed to have wings on their feet and finished the first set with a speedy 25-17. The second set was a close affair up to 11:10 for BUDVA; after that Markovic and his colleagues opened the gap for the home side (19:12) and the Czechs did not find a way to respond. The players of Jihostroj tried to show their best in the third set and they even succeeded in doing this for a short while. However, BUDVA got back control of the operations and eventually swept their opponents 25-15 for a well-deserved straight victory.

“I am very pleased with the result of this game; we were a little afraid because that was our first international match this season and we did not have any high-quality opponents so far but my players showed that they were well ready for this home debut” commented home mentor Sinisa Reljic.

“It was even easier than we had expected but I think we can perform better than we did tonight.” “I am proud of my team because tonight we played really well” added team captain Milan Markovic. “This is a very important victory. We played much disciplined and were brave. It is a pity that we lack that kind of matches in our national league. However, we are happy to be in the Champions League. This team has a huge potential and we need to show and unleash it completely.”

“Congratulations to Budvanska Rivijera because they fully deserved their victory tonight” said the middle-blocker of Jihostroj CESKE BUDEJOVICE, Stanislav Pochop. “I was surprised by the quality of our opponents because I thought that like last year we could have the upper hand but it was just impossible tonight. Budvanska Rivijera has a good team and they can achieve a lot this season.”
