Titleholders Lokomotiv delighted with their home debut
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men
Novosibirsk, Russia, October 24, 2013. Russia’s Lokomotiv NOVOSIBIRSK started their campaign to retain the title they won last March in Omsk with a straight victory over Austrian rookie Posojilnica AICH/DOB (25-20, 25-18, and 25-22) in prelim Pool E of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men.
With 2,000 fans in attendance, Lokomotiv could seize the night in what was their first game after they had returned home from Brazil. Only last Sunday Lokomotiv had played there the final match of the 2013 FIVB Club World Championships losing to hosts Sada Cruzeiro but they did not look tired or jet-lagged at all as they played Austria’s champions Posojilnica.
Lokomotiv easily controlled the first set (25-20) where wing-spiker Lukas Divis and middle-blocker Artem Volvich paced the home side. The home heroes remained much focused also in the second set where they were excellently marshaled by their setter Alexander Butko. Lokomotiv showed their determination to finish the game in straight sets and they eventually did so as Divis and Anton Astashenkov (pictured) played superbly to help NOVOSIBIRSK cruise to the final 3:0.
“We made a lot of mistakes and our opponents did not concede anything. The most difficult section of the game was the second set where we really did not stand a chance” said Posojilnica head coach Johan Verstappen.
“I am quite happy with the result of this match. Frankly speaking I did not expect this result because we are still tired from the World Championship in Brazil, but I have to thank my players for their great performance” said home mentor Andrey Voronkov.
