Home defeat for Hypo Tirol at Olympic stadium
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men

Innsbruck, Austria, October 23, 2013. As they played for the very first time at the Olympic stadium – part of the venue that played host to the Winter Olympic Games in 1964 and 1976 – the home heroes of Hypo Tirol INNSBRUCK lost their first match in the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League to Romania’s champions Tomis CONSTANTA (1:3; 14-25, 21-25, 25-22, and 16-25).
It was a very close game in the early phases of the opening set but after the first technical time-out Hypo Tirol lost their momentum and the hosts produced more and more mistakes in every fundamental. The team around head coach Stefan Chrtiansky didn’t find a way to improve on their performance for two sets.

Trailing 0:2, the Tyroleans came out strong in set 3, serving more aggressively and therefore also working more effectively in their blocking. The fans and supporters also found their fire again and cheered their team to a 25-22 set win.
Set 4 started like the previous one had ended, with great Volleyball displayed by both sides and a great atmosphere in the hall. Head to head both teams were fighting for every ball until 11:11. A row of serving errors and problems with their own reception put Hypo Tirol down 12:16 at the second technical time-out. Their rhythm was broken and the home team was not able to fight back, losing the fourth set 16-25 and the match 1:3.

Hypo Tirol head coach Stefan Chrtiansky said: “We expected more from today’s game. Especially in easy situations we didn’t execute thoroughly enough and had too much confusion on our side. CONSTANTA showed a very solid performance as we expected to be their strength. With the only exception being the third set we produced too many errors and couldn’t maintain our level consistent enough”.

Team captain Alexander Berger added: “We got off to a really bad start and couldn’t change anything in the first two sets. Our serving got stronger in game 3 and we were able to play up to our level, creating an open game and eventually taking the third set. Unfortunately we lost our track again in the middle of the fourth set. This was the first game of this year’s campaign and we have five more to come. Of course we wanted to win, but we will not give up after this defeat.”
