Zaksa opens with straight victory over rookie Galatasaray
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men

Kedzierzyn-Kozle, Poland, October 23, 2013. Poland’s Zaksa KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE started their campaign in the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League with a speedy straight victory over Turkey’s rookie Galatasaray ISTANBUL (25-23, 25-18, and 25-22).
The match got started with a neck-to-neck race in the opening set with ties at 3 and 7 before some spikes killed by Egyptian Ahmed Abdelhay propelled Galatasaray to 10:8 and 15:13 leads. Still the hosts of Zaksa were able to score the next couple of rallies to restore the balance at 15 all. With their team captain Sinan Cem Tanik playing superbly, Galatasaray was able to keep the score close up to 20 all; Zaksa blocked Cuban spiker Henry Bell for the 22:21 and it was Dominik Witczak who wrapped it up for the home side at 25-23.

After another close start (3:3), Zaksa changed gear in the second set and great blocks killed by Marcin Mozdzonek and Jurii Gladyr moved the score up to 12:6 for the local heroes. Witczak was also scoring with good consistency and Zaksa had a comfortable lead by the second technical time-out (16:9). Galatasaray was able to fight back for a short while (18:14) but Zaksa was in full control in the late phases of the set going for the provisional 2:0 (25-18).

Galatasaray stormed out to a 6:3 lead in the third set but Zaksa was quick in fighting back and make it 11 all. After an attack killed by Firat Filiz Ezel, Zaksa scored the next couple of points to get back control of the operations (14:12) and that margin was kept until the deciding final rush (18:16, 21:19). With another few blocks to stop the Turkish spikers, Zaksa players delighted 1,600 fans at Azoty hall to start their quest for European glory with a straight victory (25-22).

“It was a good test for us especially as our rivals showed good skills thereby demanding full focus and the right concentration from us” said Zaksa head coach Sebastian Swiderski. “After a very poor performance in the national league we were a little afraid going into this game and that was evident especially in the first set where we caught a slow start. However, we managed to find our rhythm and gradually imposed our pace” he added.
