Swiss rookie LUGANO debuts with memorable home victory

Lugano, Switzerland, October 23, 2013. Switzerland’s rookie Energy Investments LUGANO could not ask for more as they debuted in Europe’s elite club competition and delighted their many fans at “Resega” ice hall with a 3:2 victory (18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, and 15-9) over Turkey’s Arkas IZMIR.
Though it was their very first game in the competition, the players around head coach Mario Motta were able to deliver an excellent performance. The fans just went crazy as their heroes fought their way back after losing the opening set and swept the second and third to impose their pace in the match. LUGANO showed excellent Volleyball and played very intelligently; however, Arkas IZMIR was able to regroup and after claiming the fourth set called for the tie-break.
After a very close fight, LUGANO could break away and with their 15-9 win the Swiss champions celebrated a memorable debut in the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League while Arkas will travel home with one point from the game. John Gordon Perrin paced the Turks in their losing effort with 24 points while Brazilian Felipe Bandero’ registered 21 for the home side.
“We are just overwhelmed with joy” said LUGANO coach Mario Motta. “That was our first big match in the European Cups and we started out with a home victory. We stretched the game to the tie-break and we seized the day there. What else shall I say? We just hope to perform even better in the next match” he concluded.
