Star-studded Halkbank opens with convincing victory over JASTRZEBSKI
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Men
Ankara, Turkey, October 22, 2013. Turkey’s Halkbank ANKARA started their campaign in the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League with a home victory as the side around Bulgarian head coach Radostin Stoytchev beat Poland’s JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel 3:1 (34-36, 25-16, 25-17, and 25-20) at Baskent Volleyball Hall in Turkey’s capital city. The major stars signed for this season by Halkbank, Matey Kaziyski and Osmany Juantorena (see picture), immediately left their mark on the CL debut of their new club registering 23 and 21 points respectively.
Both teams started the game showing their determination; Halkbank stood out with their blocking while JASTRZEBSKI was particularly effective with their defense play. The guests started out strong and then imposed their pace also in the final phases of the set to make it 0:1 (34-36).
Halkbank got control of the operations right from the start of the second set (8:5) and gradually opened the gap halfway through (16:9) to comfortably cruise to the final 25-16.
In set 3 Halkbank broke away in the score halfway through; after the score was leveled at 12 all, Halkbank served for nine consecutive times to make it 21:12. It was their opposite player Mitar Tzourits – another one, like Kaziyski and Juantorena, who previously had played in Italy for the likes of TRENTINO – wrapped it up at 25-17 with a powerful spike.
In the fourth and last set Halkbank and JASTRZEBSKI put up a close fight but the hosts turned the score around by the second technical time-out (16:13, after they had trailed 6:8) and completed their mission at 25-20 for a well-deserved 3:1 victory.
