2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championship - Women

Baku, Azerbaijan, January 4, 2014. Azerbaijan and Serbia prolonged their winning streak at the World Champs qualifier taking place in Baku as on Saturday they scored a second victory in the tournament and will fight for first place on Sunday as they cross their ways in the last round of action. The bronze medalists from the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix, Serbia routed Israel in three straight sets (25-9, 25-12, and 25-20) before the hosts of Azerbaijan downed Estonia with a similar score line (25-17, 25-19, and 25-13).
Serbia imposed their rule right from the start and cruised to a terrific 25-9 in the first set of their game with Israel. The players mentored by head coach Zoran Terzic showed the same pace also in the second set where their opponents did not stand a chance as well (25-12). The third set was just a formality with Serbia adding a second straight victory to their account (25-20) after Friday’s win with Estonia.
The hosts of Azerbaijan were the pre-favorite side going into their clash with Estonia and they lived up to all expectations opening strong (17:7) and comfortably cashing the first set (25-17). Estonia was able to take the lead in the second set (11:8) but Azerbaijan came back strong to flip the charts around and make it 2:0 in sets (25-19). After that, the home side did not find any resistance from their opponents and quickly pocketed a well-deserved straight victory (25-13).
