Last first-round qualifier got started in Malta
2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championship - Women

Cospicua, Malta, June 28, 2013. On Friday the last first-round qualifier for the 2014 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship started with a tough match with Scotland edging a brave Luxembourg team 3-2. The match lasted 132 minutes. Isabelle Frisch (LUX) was the best player edging out Lynne Beattie (SCO). 
Scotland started very strongly winning the first set 25-11, but Luxembourg proved to be tough opponents in the second set and they won the second set 22-25. The third and fourth sets were finely balanced Scotland winning 25-22 the third set and Luxembourg replying back to win the fourth 22-25. In the final set, thanks to some good blocks from Catherine Sym, Scotland managed to close the game 15-12.  

Cyprus showed in the second game that they are one of the contenders to win the tournament. They won 3-0 against San Marino in 77 minutes. Cyprus started strongly winning the first set 25-14 thanks to the spikes from Antonia Theoti and good play from Antri Iordanou. San Marino put a fight in the second only to lose 26-24. Elisa Parenti and Cristina Bacciocchi were inspiring form in the second set for San Marino. Cyprus stepped up a gear in the final part of the game to win the game 25-20 thanks to some good blocks from Andrea Charalambous.  

The final game was another tight contest with Luxembourg edging out Malta 3-2 in a game that lasted 108 minutes. Malta started strongly building a healthy lead but were begged back with some good play from Analena Mach. However, thanks to some good spikes from Alison Borg and Daniela Bonnici, Malta managed to close the first set in their favor 25-20. During the second set, Malta failed to find their rhythm and Luxembourg thanks to good services from Fabienne Welsch closed the set quite comfortably 9-25. Luxembourg maintained a good rhythm in the third set winning it 25-17 thanks to some good play from Analena Mach. The fourth set saw a good comeback from Malta with good attacks from both Alison Borg and Daniela Bonnici. The set ended up in Malta’s favor 25-17 with some good services from Sarah El Gasi. The fifth was quite balanced initially but Luxembourg finished strongly to win the set 15-9 with some good play from Betty Hoffmann and Analena Mach.
