Montenegro claims dramatic five setter with Pool leaders Czech Republic
2013 CEV Volleyball European League - Men
Podgorica, Montenegro, June 30, 2013. The local heroes of Montenegro finished their home round of play in the prelims of the 2013 CEV Volleyball European League – Men by edging the Czech Republic, i.e. the current leaders of Pool B, at the end of a dramatic five setter (21-16, 16-21, 18-21, 21-18, and 18-16). Though they suffered on Sunday their second loss in the competition, the Czechs are still ranked first in the Pool with 21 points; Montenegro is second sharing the same points – 16 – with Spain but with a better set ratio.
Montenegro got off to an excellent start claiming the first set of their match against the Czechs with ease (21-16). Still the Czech Republic was able to respond to that challenge by taking set two and three. Montenegro’s head coach Nikola Matijasevic tried some substitutions and it worked as his side got back on track to seize the fourth set and call for the tie-break. The local favorites went up 8:3 there before the Czech Republic closed the gap. After a very close and dramatic final rush, it was Montenegro that had the upper hand in the end (18-16) to memorably close the first weekend of European League action ever in Montenegro’s capital city.
In the other match of the day Spain quickly cruised to a 3:0 win (25-16, 25-14, and 25-10) over Hungary to complete a clean sweep of their games for this weekend.
