Belgium only one step away from final four spot
2013 CEV Volleyball European League - Men
Antwerp, Belgium, June 29, 2013. Belgium needs just one more win to qualify for the final four of the 2013 CEV Volleyball European League – Men. On Saturday the home heroes mentored by head coach Dominique Baeyens did edge Denmark in three sets (22-20, 21-13, and 21-17) to score their eighth consecutive victory in Pool A.
However, things were not that easy for Denmark caught a good start and even had a couple of set balls in the first set (20:18) while powered by their opposite Mads Ditlevsen. However, some good blocks and attacks killed by Gert Van Walle flipped the charts around and made sure that Belgium could cash the opening set at 22-20. The home side played without any pressure later in the game dominating the scene in the second set (21-13) and doing so also in the third (12:7); Denmark nevertheless fought their way back making it 16 all before Belgium could finish it off at 21-17. “We knew we could not underestimate Denmark” says Van Walle. “We had some difficulties in the first set but we finally could make the difference. Though we did change a lot in comparison to yesterday’s game I am happy that we could score another win. Hopefully tomorrow we can beat Austria and celebrate our qualification for the final four even with one round still to go in Slovakia”.
In the other match of the day, Austria – currently ranked second in the Pool – did lose 1:3 to Slovakia (21-16, 14-21, 19-21, and 16-21). Austria got control of the operations in the first set with some impressive blocks but Jozef Piovarci and his teammates stepped up in the next three to claim a well-deserved win after a thrilling and exciting match.
