Spain stops Czech winning streak to six matches

Podgorica, Montenegro, June 28, 2013. On Friday Spain caused the first sensation of third-round play in prelim Pool B of the 2013 CEV Volleyball European League – Men by stopping the winning streak of group leaders Czech Republic after six matches. Spain cruised past in four sets (28-30, 21-11, 21-17, and 21-19) to edge the guys who had dominated the scene of the previous rounds in the group.
Both teams had a few set balls in the opening set before the Czech Republic brought it home at 30-28. However, Spain changed gear after that comfortably sweeping the three next sets to put an end to the winning streak of the Czechs after six consecutive matches.
In the other match of the day, the home heroes of Montenegro edged Hungary in three sets (21-17, 22-20, and 21-15) to consolidate their second place in the group. This was the first home win in straight sets for the Montenegrin team since the first round qualifier for the European Championship against Norway played in May 2009. Montenegro set the pace of the game all the way through in the first set and in the second could bring it home after a very close final rush (22-20). The third set was an easy run for Montenegro with head coach Nikola Matijasevic who could give some playing time to all members of his team.
