2013 CEV Volleyball European League - Men
Kecskemét, Hungary, June 15, 2013. On the opening day of action for prelim Pool B of the 2013 CEV Volleyball European League – Men, rookie Montenegro bested the hosts of Hungary – who were also celebrating their debut in the competition – in straight sets (21-13, 21-15, and 23-21) before 400 fans. Montenegro dominated the scene in the first two sets before Hungary was able to keep the score tight for most of the third.
“We did lose because of our own mistakes” Hungary’s head coach György Demeter said after the game. “Unfortunately our attack did not work at all but I do hope we will improve in the next games and rounds”. “I am very happy with this win in straight sets. However, we also made mistakes and there are things we have to improve on” Montenegrin mentor Nikola Matijasevic said.
In the other match of the day the Czech Republic beat Spain 3:1 (21-16, 17-21, 21-19, and 21-18). Czech middle blocker Vladimir Sobotka suffered an ankle injury during the warm up and could therefore not join the game. “This victory over Spain is very important for us” said Czech mentor Stewart Bernard. “Spain started out strong but we managed to turn things around and win the game”. “I think we were close to make it 2:2 and go for the tie-break but ultimately this did not happen. Congratulations to the Czech team on their victory” Spain’s head coach Fernando Muñoz said.
