Poland makes it to final round after fourth consecutive win
2013 CEV Youth Volleyball European Championship - Girls
Lutsk, Ukraine, January 6, 2013. Poland’s girls prolonged their winning streak in Lutsk to four matches as on Sunday they easily edged Austria in straight sets (25-17, 25-17, and 25-7) to qualify for the final round of the 2013 CEV Youth Volleyball European Championship that is scheduled for late March in Bar (MNE) and Kladovo (SRB). Even though Austria played with glowing hearts, still it was not enough to threaten the leaders of the Pool with Malwina Smarzek top scoring once more for Poland with 14 points.
The fight for the second place and a possible ticket to the final round is still open after Sunday’s matches. Latvia claimed their first win in the competition after edging England in only 69 minutes (25-23, 25-13, and 25-17) in a match where the girls from the UK were close to seize their first set in the group.
The other match of the day was much more interesting with the Netherlands eventually cementing their second place in the standings after edging the hosts of Ukraine 3:1 (25-15, 9-25, 25-18, and 25-16). The local heroines played superbly in the second set but the “Oranjes” got back on track to assert their intention to make it to the final round of the Championship.
