Italy claims big match with Russia in Moscow
2013 CEV Youth Volleyball European Championship - Girls
Moscow, Russia, January 4, 2013. In what was certainly the most anticipated match of the tournament, the guests from Italy edged the home heroines of Russia on the second day of action of the qualifier for the 2013 CEV Youth Volleyball European Championship – Girls that is currently taking place at “Luch” sports complex in Russia’s capital city. Italy claimed that match after a real marathon (3:2; 18-25, 25-19, 25-23, 20-25, and 15-10) with Valentin Zhukov, Honorary President of the Russian Volleyball Federation, also in attendance.
The “Luch” sports hall was fully packed with 500 spectators and Russia started out strong claiming the opening set with the score of 25-18. Italy responded by pocketing the second section of the game and did repeat this feat also in set 3 after the teams had exchanged the lead a few times there. Russia got back on track in set 4 opening with a 5:0 that paved the way for the final 25-20 and called for the tie-break. The home heroines could not exploit their chances there and it was Italy that could celebrate in the end.
In the first match of the day Belgium scored their second victory by cruising past Belarus with the score of 3:1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-16, and 26-24). Belarus had opened strong and gone to the front also in the second set (8:4) before a series of mistakes paved the way with gold for Belgium. After seizing the second set, Belgium played with confidence and was not to be stopped.
In the other match scheduled on Friday, Norway claimed its first win in the competition by edging Estonia 3:1 (20-25, 26-24, 25-23, and 26-24) in a game that was marked by many mistakes on both sides of the net.
