Historic win for Norway in Jelgava, strong opening for Russia
2013 CEV Youth Volleyball European Championship - Boys

Jelgava, Latvia, January 3, 2013. Russia, Ukraine and Norway all claimed their opening matches as another qualifier for the 2013 CEV Youth Volleyball European Championship – Boys got started on Thursday in Jelgava.
Russia opened the tournament by routing Slovenia in straight sets (25-20, 25-21, and 25-13). The winning team was paced by Dmitry Volkov with 12 points while Toncek Stern, Uros Tucen and Jakob Rojnik registered 7 apiece for Slovenia.

In the second match of the day Ukraine beat Estonia 3:2 (22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 23-25, and 21-19) after what was a real marathon. Oliver Orav – Estonia’s diagonal player – registered a massive haul of 35 points with Kevin Saar and Taavi Arula adding 11 points apiece to the final count of their side. Andriy Marynchenko paced Ukraine with 16. “The victory of our opponents today was only a question of luck” said Estonia’s mentor Toomas Jasmin after the game, “because this is what makes the difference at the end of a game like this. If I have to single out one player from my team, I would definitely say Oliver Orav”.

Norway rounded out the program by edging the hosts of Latvia at the end of another thriller (25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 25-18, and 15-10). Havard Aarrestad top scored for Norway with 16 points while the home side was anchored by Aleksands Avdejevs with 17. “Norway always plays in the first round and has almost never made it to the second round of this competition, so we are evidently happy to start the tournament with this win, a premiere at this level” said Norway’s head coach, Japan-born Haruya Indo.   “The result of this match could have been different if we had showed better reception. However, I still hope we can step up and play better in the next matches” stressed home mentor Janis Bomins.
