DABROWA GORNICZA downs DRESDNER SC keeping alive hopes to make it to Playoffs
2013 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Women
Dabrowa Gornicza, Poland, December 4, 2012. It was a happy Volleyball night for the fans of Poland’s Tauron MKS DABROWA GORNICZA that cruised to a straight win over Germany’s DRESDNER SC (27-25, 25-17, and 25-23) to remain in contention for a spot in the Playoffs 12 of the 2013 CEV Volleyball Champions League waiting for the last round in Pool D coming up next week in Istanbul against Eczacibasi VitrA.
Actually the hosts caught a slow start going down 1:4 in the first set before some blocks and the serve of Elzbieta Skowronska could help the local heroines find their way into the game. After leading 8:7 at the first technical time-out, DABROWA GORNICZA was having a tough time to stand the pressure put by DRESDNER SC that went ahead by three points and even set the pace 24:20 right by the end of the set. However, the guests missed out on four set balls and DABROWA wrapped it up at 27-25.
Tauron MKS immediately set the tone in the second set (4:1) and quite easily controlled the operations anchored by a great performance by Joanna Kaczor. She was supported by Joanna Staniucha-Szczurek and DABROWA GORNICZA went up 16:10 by the second technical time-out to finish it off quite quickly at 25-17 for the provisional 2:0.
A real fight followed in the third set where Natalia Nuszel scored some points for the home side in attack as well as from the serving line, Skowronska then claimed a margin of two (18:16) that was kept up to the end (25-23) for a memorable home win in straight sets.
“We really wanted to take three points from this match and it finally happened. We played very good in defense, but also our block and service helped us tonight. We knew what to expect tonight after the tough match we had had in Dresden” says captain Magdalena Sliwa.
“It was a strange match tonight” says Tauron MKS head coach Waldemar Kawka. “We were relying on the errors of our opponent for the first two sets but I think in the third we eventually did display our best. We attacked well and our reception worked much better than in the first and second set. We are tired as we have traveled extensively, so my players looked slow and sleepy. The most important thing is that we got this 3:0 win and that’s all”.
“Of course I am sad that we lost this game but we could not display our best Volleyball and made many mistakes in reception and with our service” singles out DRESDNER SC captain Stefanie Karg.
“I would like to congratulate our opponents on their win tonight” points out DRESDNER SC mentor Alexander Waibl. “I think that we did not lose simply because of our mistakes. The victory went to the side that was capable of showing the best skills. I still have to figure out why we were not able to bring it home in the first set, while the remainder of the match was really disappointing for us. We surely can’t be satisfied with the result”.
