Romanian ladies prolong their winning streak in Pool E
2013 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Women
Constanta, Romania, October 30, 2012. Romania’s 2004 Tomis CONSTANTA claimed on Tuesday its second consecutive win in the prelims of the 2013 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Women. After cruising past Robur Tiboni URBINO last week in Italy, the players from the Black Sea prolonged their winning streak by edging SCHWERINER SC at the end of a real marathon (3:2; 25-11, 29-27, 16-25, 21-25, and 17-15).
SCHWERINER SC had also caused a sensation in the first round of play by beating Dinamo KAZAN of Russia, but the hosts did not show any weakness in the first set as they opened with a splendid 8:3 and 16:7 run resulting from a combination of good attacks – by Natasa Sevarika and Jeoselyna Rodriguez Santos – and serves by Diana Calota, thereby quickly cruising to a massive 25-11.
The score remained very tight in the early phases of the second set (4:4, 8:7) but SCHWERINER SC gradually found the right composure and even moved to the front powered by Slovak spiker Lucia Hatinova (14:16, 16:19). After a very close battle, the hosts eventually clipped that section of the game with the score of 29-27.
SCHWERINER SC imposed its tempo in set 3 going up 8:4 and 13:5 as the hosts were evidently struggling in reception. Meagan Ganzer joined the game for Tomis but the set was already gone and sealed by the guests from Germany at 25-16.
SCHWERINER SC dictated the pace of the game also in set 4 (8:5) but Tomis gradually fought back drawing level at 19 all. However, the hosts lacked accuracy and consistency in the final rush and SCHWERINER SC could call for the tie-break (25-21).
The final set was a real thriller with the score remaining extremely close, many ties followed but it was the home side that eventually brought it home at 17-15.
“I do have some regrets especially since in my opinion we dominated the scene in the last three sets” says the head coach of the German side, Teun Buijs.
