Away win marks memorable comeback for Russian glorious side
2013 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Women
Ekaterinburg, Russia, October 25, 2012. Uralochka-NTMK EKATERINBURG celebrated a splendid comeback in the CEV Volleyball Champions League after missing Europe’s most elitist competition for the past seven years. On Wednesday night the Russian side cruised to a 3:2 away win to edge last year’s silver medalists of RC CANNES; although the most decorated club in Russian history certainly wanted to be again a major force to reckon with, only a few could have predicted such a classy debut.
That game started as an uphill climb for Uralochka as RC CANNES confidently claimed the first set 25-20 but afterwards relaxed a little bit too much being punished by the Russian opponents that minimized their errors and pocketed set 2 and 3. After a close final rush (27-25) CANNES could call for the tie-break but Uralochka totally dominated the scene there (7-15).
After this great result, the local fans in Ekaterinburg simply can’t wait for the first home match of their heroines that is scheduled for November 1 against Turkey’s Vakifbank ISTANBUL. The winners of the 2011 edition also opened their campaign with a solid performance edging Swiss Volero ZÜRICH with a triple 25-16 and Christiane Fürst top scoring with 13 points.
