Azerrail wins CL premiere but finds good opposition from DRESDNER SC
2013 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men
Baku, Azerbaijan, October 24, 2012. Azerrail BAKU started out its campaign in the 2013 CEV Volleyball Champions League by scoring a 3:1 home win against DRESDNER SC (23-25, 25-14, 25-14, and 25-17).
The home heroines of Azerrail caught a good start going up 8:4 in the first set and even stretched that margin to 10:5. As the score stood at 11:6, DRESDNER SC asked for a time-out and it helped as the German players regrouped and fought back to draw level and even move ahead (14:17). The local side then clawed back to level at 18 and 21 but it was DRESDNER SC that showed very good tempo down the final stretch to pocket the opening set with the score of 23-25.
Azerrail was evidently caught by surprise and did not waste any time to assert its supremacy in set 2 with a terrific 8:2 to set the tone of what was going to follow. DRESDNER SC fought back to 12:8 but Azerrail controlled the game (18:11) and eventually finished it off with an impressive 25-14.
DRESDNER SC caught a 2:4 lead in the early phases of set 3 but Azerrail was already back to the front by the first technical time-out. The home ladies widened the gap gradually but confidently (12:7, 18:13) and eventually could seal another 25-14.
The fourth set started with a neck-to-neck race that continued up to 14 all; after that, Azerrail did accelerate the pace and scored the next three points paving the way for the final 25-17 and a 3:1 win.
