Aris wins home match in first round of CEV Cup

Thessaloniki, Greece, October 24, 2012. Aris THESSALONIKI caught a splendid start in the 2013 CEV Volleyball Cup by edging Belgium’s Schelde-N. Precura ANTWERP in straight sets (25-17, 25-21, and 25-23).
Aris quickly got control of the game right by the early phases of the opening set and maintained a margin of four to five points all the way through by displaying a great array of options in attack.
The guests from Belgium started out pretty well in thte second set (5:8) but Aris got back on track and could draw level at 15 all. THESSALONIKI accelerated for the provisional 21:18 and eventually pocketed the second set at 25-21.
Some mistakes by the hosts helped the Belgians move up 16:11 in the third set but Aris fought back with good serving to level at 17 and eventually cruised to a straight-set win.
Aris head coach Giorgios Giatsis said: “We played very well tonight and could claim the match. We are satisfied with the result as this is the first step for making it to the next phase”.
The mentor of ANTWERP, Kris Tanghe, said: “It was a difficult match against a very good team. We had the opportunity to win the third set but at that point they started pressuring us with their service and we did not have any chance anymore”.
