Switzerland sweeps past Cyprus in Limassol
2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship - Men
Limassol, Cyprus, January 7, 2012. Switzerland got past the shock caused by yesterday’s defeat to Croatia to go for a speedy 3:0 win (25-15, 25-16, 25-17) to edge the hosts of Cyprus in the second day of action at the first round qualifier for the 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship – Men that is running this weekend in Limassol.
The Swiss, by far taller than the home guys, were superior in all fundamentals, killing 40 attacks vs. only 27 for the hosts, stamping 9 blocks (vs. 7 for Cyprus) and adding to the count a total of 6 aces.
Adrian Heidrich was the best player of the match and top scored with 14 points, while Giorgos Moschovakis totaled 12 for the home side.
“After yesterday’s defeat I am glad that we were able to play the way we did” says Swiss head coach Urs Winteler. “We stayed positive even after last night’s match with Croatia and I am happy that we claimed this win as we had planned”.
“The difference between the two teams was evident” adds local mentor Kostas Delikostas. “My players looked much stressed and Switzerland had a tempo that was three times quicker than ours. However, we hoped to score more points than we actually did in all sets”.
Having completed its duty in Limassol, Switzerland leads the standings but has to wait for the result of the match opposing Croatia to Cyprus to know whether it will advance to the second round or not. The last match of the tournament is scheduled for Sunday at 19:00 local time (17:00 GMT).
