Croatia's ladies book spot for final round via classy win over Romania
2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women
Rovinj, Croatia, September 15, 2012. Croatia caused the sensation of the day in Rovinj as the home heroines cruised to a 3:0 win to edge Romania (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) and finish first in Pool D at the end of the second round robin. This means Croatia qualifies directly for the final round of the 2013 European Championship while Romania will have a last chance via the third qualification round scheduled for May 2013.
“Croatia was definitely the best side today and we could not find a way to stop their opposite Sanja Popovic” said Romania’s head coach Atanas Petrov at the end of the game.
“We have fought with all of our hearts and we showed we are a great team, so we deserved to be in the final round of the European Championship” stated the Croatian star and top scorer.
In the other match of the final day, Great Britain beat Portugal for the second time in less than 10 days, with a relatively clear 3:0 (25-22, 27-25, and 25-20). “This was our last match of the season and everyone was really motivated” said Team GB leader Lynne Beattie.
“This is the first tournament where we play together as a team, so it is good that we have been improving match after match” said Portugal’s captain Dulce Santos Machado. “We played a team that recently participated in the Olympics and has a lot more experience than we do, so we can be satisfied with our performance” added Daniela Loureiro.
