Bulgaria completes marvelous comeback to pre-book European pass
2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women
Budapest, Hungary, September 13, 2012. Bulgaria’s women are very close to book their ticket for the final round of the 2013 European Championship after they opened the second round robin for Pool F by edging their closest rivals, i.e. the Czech Republic, once again in five sets (23-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-22, and 15-12) as they had done last weekend in Varna.
Bulgaria scored the first rally of the match but the Czechs walked away 6:2 and 8:4 in the opening set before the ladies coached by Marcello Abbondanza could flip the charts around at 11:10. Even though the Czechs dictated the pace of the game for most of the opening set, still Bulgaria drew level at 22 before their opponents sealed the final 25-23. Helena Havelkova anchored her side in the second set and the Czechs, winners of the 2012 European League, could move up 2:0 after scoring a relatively easy 25-17 in set 2. Bulgaria stepped up in set 3 with Elitsa Vasileva, Mariya Filipova and Diana Nenova that helped go for the final 25-22. Bulgaria stretched that tempo also to set 4 (25-19) and called for the tie-break where they opened strong (5:1) and played with great enthusiasm to wrap it up at 15-12 and complete their comeback.
In the other match of the day the home girls of Hungary repeated their result from last week in Varna by besting their opponents from Latvia with the score of 3:1. Hungary started well to claim the opening set at 25-21 serving well while Latvia showed some weakness in reception. However, Latvia bounced back in set 2 going for a splendid 25-18 that drew level in sets. The third set was initially quite close before Hungary could finish it at 25-18 and the home side totally dominated the scene in set 4 wrapping it up at 25-16 for the final 3:1.
