Romania outclasses Portugal to stay atop of the standings
2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women
Rovinj, Croatia, September 13, 2012. Romania opened the second round robin of Pool D in Rovinj by cruising to a speedy 3:0 (25-15, 25-12, and 25-10) win against Portugal to remain atop of the charts. Romania clearly dominated the scene there right from the start and did not lose composure up to the end of the game.
“This was a good start of the tournament for my team but I also have to say that the most demanding matches still have to come” said Romania’s head coach Atanas Petrov. “Congratulations to Romania; our thoughts are already addressed to the next game” commented Portugal’s team manager Amelia Melo.
In the other match of the day the home heroines of Croatia edged Great Britain in straight sets (25-12, 25-21, and 25-21) to cement their second place in the standings of the group. “I am simply disappointed” said Team GB head coach Audrey Cooper. “I could line up only half of our regular starting six and it is hard to go for a win by relying exclusively on your passion and fighting spirit”. Croatia’s captain Sanja Popovic believes the real challenge will be brought by Romania: “They made 33 errors and this helped us score this speedy win. We are pleased with the result and it is always nice to play in front of the home crowd”.
