Finland re-starts chase for European ticket with speedy home win
2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Men

Vantaa, Finland, September 14, 2012. Finland started the second round robin whereby a ticket for the 2013 European Championship will be assigned by beating Romania in three sets (25-20, 25-17, and 25-17) to claim the leadership in the group with a margin of two points to Greece and Montenegro that opened the program with a tight match eventually seized by Greece at the tie-break.
“Our team was very motivated and ready to fight. We wanted to play better than we did in the last match played in Greece where we lost to the hosts in straight sets” says Finland’s head coach Daniel Castellani. “The group played well and I want to single out Matti Hietanen who did attack and block extremely well”. Hietanen top scored for Finland with 18 points well supported by Mikko Oivanen with 17. Romania’s head coach Mariusz Sordyl was not happy with the result but admitted that Finland is much stronger at the moment. “Last week we played poorly, tonight we played better but the result remains the same”.

In the other match of the day Greece beat Montenegro at the end of a real marathon (25-20, 25-18, 32-34, 22-25, and 15-11). Everything looked easy for Greece in the first two sets before their opponents could fend off five match balls in set 3 and seize it with the incredible score of 34-32. Montenegro played well also in set 4 and called for the tie-break where Greece eventually could finish it off at 15-11. Greece’s opposite Mitar Tzourits amassed a total of 36 points while Costas Christofidelis also performed well registering 20. Milos Culafic and Aleksandar Milivojevic top scored for Montenegro with 28 and 22 respectively.
