Romania qualifies for second round with another win over Cyprus
2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Men
Piatra Neamt, Romania, May 19, 2012. Romania qualified this afternoon for the second round of the 2013 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Men after edging Cyprus for the second time in about one week, this time with the score of 3:1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-22, and 25-23). Via this win Romania will join the second qualification round scheduled for next September to test out there the likes of Finland, Greece and Montenegro.
With the contribution of Dan Borota and Florin Bahalceanu, Romania immediately dictated the pace of the game (8:6) but the guests from Cyprus flipped the score around anchored by their opposite Gabriel Georgiou and wing spiker Vladimir Knezevic, thereby enjoying a margin of four by the second mandatory stop of the opening set. The home side tried to respond via the spikes of Dan Borota but finally could not finalize its comeback, losing the first set 20-25.
Borota and Bahalceanu found back their best play in set 2 where Romania went up by the first and second technical time-out (8:6 and 16:12) and even though Cyprus was able to briefly come back with Georgiou behind the serving line, Romania’s defense stood the pressure – well helped by their libero Adrian Feher – and the home side could go for the provisional 1:1 (25-20).
Set 3 followed a similar plot with Borota and Bahalceanu pacing Romania (8:6, 16:12) whose offense was well mastered by setter George Moisa. Cyprus responded with some clever attacks placed by outside hitter Nikos Kola but still this was not enough to stop Romania’s march towards the provisional 2:1 (25-22).
Once again Borota and Bahalceanu scored with great consistency for Romania also in set 4 (8:6, 16:13) but Cyprus fought its way back (21:20) mainly supported by the blocks and spikes of middle blocker Angelos Alexiou. Romania’s defense stepped up once more with Feher standing out in this fundamental before Borota and Bahalceanu sealed the deal with the score of 3:1 (25-23).
