GENTOFTE Volley secure right to challenge strong Italians
2018 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Men

Gentofte, Denmark, November 29, 2017. The reigning Danish vice champions and cup winners, GENTOFTE Volley, had the honour of welcoming BK TROMSØ from Norway in Kildeskovshallen in Gentofte, in the outskirts of Copenhagen. One week ago, the Danes had claimed a 3-0 victory in Tromsø, so the hosts were the clear-cut favourites in the re-match and eventually stormed to another 3-0 win (25-20, 25-19, 29-27) to secure their progression to the 16th Finals of the 2018 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Men.

In the first set, GENTOFTE Volley claimed an early lead at 8-5. Strong attacks especially from their team captain, Peter Trolle Bonnesen and from outside hitter Mads Møllgaard made sure the hosts would maintain that edge through to the end of the set (25-20).

Only one set away from a spot in the next round, GENTOFTE Volley seemed a little nervous from the beginning of the second set. As they trailed 12-14, their Serbian head coach, Denis Janka, took his first time-out. It helped his team and with good serving from Rasmus Mikelsons, the hosts crawled their way back to a 19-14 lead. The rest of the set was a side-out game and GENTOFTE finished it off at 25-19, thus securing their spot in the next round of the competition.

The match continued and the two coaches took the opportunity to try some of their reserve players. BK TROMSØ used their chance and the third set became a very close one. However, GENTOFTE was still the stronger side and eventually celebrated a 3-0 victory (29-27).

Janka was very satisfied with his team: “I am really happy for the result. I think we played a good match in all elements of the game. I am especially glad that all players on the team showed that they have what it takes to compete at this level. We are as a club very proud and we look forward to meeting the Italians in the next round.”

GENTOFTE Volley will now prepare for a big and exciting challenge against Bunge RAVENNA.
