2012 CEV VOLLEYBALL EUROPEAN LEAGUE - MEN & WOMEN
COMPETITION FORMAT
Introduction
The CEV Volleyball European League is a competition – specifically addressed to national teams – that was introduced back in 2004 (men) with the women’s division being added to the portfolio some years later, namely in 2009.
Originally the European League was addressed to those national teams not included in the starting field of the FIVB World League thereby providing such sides with an additional chance to develop their skills and potential on the international arena.
The appeal of the CEV Volleyball European League has been significantly enhanced after CEV has finalized an agreement with the FIVB whereby the winner of the men’s competition qualifies for the Intercontinental Qualification Round of the FIVB World League while the two first-ranked teams of the women’s division get the right to represent Europe in the next edition of the FIVB World Grand Prix. This provision applies also to the 2012 CEV Volleyball European League – Men & Women.
Competition format for the 2012 CEV Volleyball European League
The 2012 CEV Volleyball European League – Men & Women consists of a preliminary phase, named League Round, and a final round to be joined by four teams per gender.
The League Round
The participating teams will be assigned to preliminary Pools that may comprise four or five teams each.
- In case of Pools with 4 teams, each National Federation will be organizing a round robin tournament;
- In case of Pools with 5 teams, each National Federation will be organizing a tournament to be joined by 4 teams while the remaining team will be resting; finally the League Round will last for 5 weeks with every team resting for one out of the five weekends of play.
All tournaments are played according to the round robin system (“each one against each other”); at the end only one ranking will be determined for all teams included in one Pool.
The Final Round
How teams qualify
- The organizer of the final round is directly qualified regardless of its results in the League Round.
- In case that two pools of 5 teams each are played and in case the organizer is among the 1st or 2nd ranked teams, both the 1st and 2nd ranked teams of each pool will qualify for the Final Round. If the organizer is not among the 1st or 2nd ranked teams, then the 1st ranked teams and the second ranked team with the best score will qualify for the Final Round. - In case that three pools of 4 teams each are played and in case the organizer is among the 1st ranked teams, the 1st ranked teams as well as the 2nd ranked team with the best score qualify for the Final Round. If the organizer is not among the 1st ranked teams, then exclusively the 1st ranked teams will qualify for the Final Round.
Format of the Final Round
The Final Round is always joined by 4 teams. The grid for the semifinals is determined as per the results of a Drawing of Lots. All matches are played in the same venue.
The program of the final round includes:
- 2 semifinals;
- Classification match 3/4;
- Final match.
